Frequently Asked Questions of David Allio
Professional Motorsports Photographer

How can I get started?

Do not plan on starting at the top. Learn the basic skills at a local short track and make connections from there.

Is there a big difference between oval and drag racing?

Different skill sets are required because of the differences in style and speed. Oval cars are supposed to move at a consistent speed. Drag racing launches from a standing start.

When did you shoot your first race?

I have a few fan photos taken in 1971. My first photos with professional equipment came in 1972. But, the earliest photo that I have had published was taken in 1974.

How did you get your big break?

In 1975, I was in the right place at the right time. I listened to the client and delivered what they needed.

How many race tracks have you been to?

About 300 on three different continents.

Where is your favorite race track?

Wherever I'm working next.

What is your favorite form of racing?

Whatever is next.
