Kauai Photography Workshop FAQs Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Kauai?
The Garden Island of Kauai Hawaii sits northwest of the main Hawaiian islands and the state capitol of
Honolulu. The primary airport on the island of Kauai is Lihue (LIH) and the main passenger ship port is
Nawiliwili Harbor. Kaua'i was selected as the Number One Hawaiian Island in Travel + Leisure Magazine's
"World's Best" 2006 Reader's Survey.
Where are the Kauai Workshop/Seminar Programs Conducted?
Participants do not live, work, and visit this island paradise to sit in a classroom. So, all
workshops, seminars, and photowalks are conducted at scenic locations across the island. Many of these
locations are inaccessable or by-passed by bus tours. Walking and light-to-moderate hiking is usually
required. Except as specifically indicated on the Workshop Schedule/Reservations
web page, participants are also responsible for transportation to each on-island location.
Who should Attend?
Everyone interested in improving their technical photographic skills are encouraged to participate.
Customized instructional materials have been designed for beginners, advanced amateurs, and professionals.
Each class usually contains one visiting professional photographer as a participant. The remainder of the
participants are a mixture of serious amateur and semi-pro photography enthusiasts.
Reservations may be made online.
I do not have a digital SLR camera - will this matter??
The type of camera is not as important as simply having a working camera.
Most of the technical material covered during a photowalk or workshop works equally well for all brands
and types of film and digital cameras. Just remember to bring the instruction manual for your specific
camera equipment.
Film or Digital Imaging?
Although these classes concentrate on digital photography instruction, traditional film information
is also available. With either image medium, the goal is to provide participants with information and
opportunities for creating better photographs while enjoying one of the world's best tropical vacation
settings.
What are the Workshop Instructional Goals?
Workshop and seminar classes have been designed to provide a common technical foundation on which to
build creative confidence, teach techniques and practices for working safer in a dangerous environment,
as well as increase the understanding of copyright, licensing and marketing related to photo sales.
Emphasis is on correct camera and equipment techniques at the moment of exposure rather than
time-consuming post-processing.
Do Photowalks have different Instructional Goals?
Photowalks, like workshops, have been designed to provide a common technical foundation - with a
bit less emphasis on technical and more on fun - on which to build creative confidence, techniques,
and practices for working safer in a dangerous environment. Photowalk instruction places a greater
emphasis on allowing beginners and photo enthusiasts to learn, apply, and improve their basic and
creative photographic techniques using their own equipment. Most participants start to explore and
learn to use new tools - usually hidden behind technical jargon - available within their existing
equipment.
What should I Bring?
Participants in all programs are expected to bring their camera, accessories, extra batteries,
extra film, and instruction book. A specific checklist is provided to workshop participants.
How much Digital Workflow and Software Instruction is included?
The priority and majority of instruction concentrates on the accurate and correct creation of the
photograph in the camera rather than through the wasteful, time-consuming process of software image
correction. Digital workflow and software options may be discussed during the photography instructional
programs. But, those discussions tend to follow the strict software manipulation guidelines established
by international wire services.
What is the Student to Instructor ratio?
Group sizes are restricted to allow for maximum interaction between participants and the instructor.
The specific maximum class sizes are shown on the Workshop Schedule/Reservations
web page.
Why are instruction program schedules not published?
There is a general outline for each instruction program. However, the final program schedule is
usually not confirmed until about 24-hours prior to the start of the program. This allows for
consideraton of local weather/climate conditions, as well as possible special events or photo
opportunities.
What about Incliment Weather?
Except in rare instances, all programs will proceed rain-or-shine. Schedules may be adjusted to
accomodate local conditions and for safety considerations. No rain, no rainbows.
What is the Refund Policy?
Details regarding reservation cancellations may be found online at
Workshop Terms and Conditions.
If a Workshop/Seminar is already Sold Out is there a Waitlist?
No. Please see the Workshop Terms and Conditions for details
Are Film Processing and Photo Supplies available in Kauai?
Processing of popular-sized traditional silver-based color film is available at several locations
on Kauai. Some photofinishers offer one-hour processing of negative films. Prints from digital files
are also available. Custom color slide film processing is not readily available. A limited amount of
camera equipment and digital accessories are available.
