The Norfolk and Western (N&W) Class J 611 Steam Passenger Locomotive powers through the switching yard in Bedford, Virginia, following a one-year restoration at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, North Carolina. Class J locomotives were designed, constructed, and maintained in Roanoke, Virginia. The 611 entered service on May 29, 1950. The 494,000-pound steam locomotive retired from passenger rail service on October 24, 1959, but returned for excursions from 1982 through 1994. In 1984, the 611 was named a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
