Afternoon sun provides natural illumination for the interior of the Green Monster Mine in southern Nevada. This abandoned zinc mine is just one of hundreds of excavation, exploration, and prospecting sites that have proliferated in the mineral-rich Mojave Desert since the mid-1800s.

Abandoned mines present many seen and unseen hazards. Experienced explorers suggest traveling in groups with the appropriate protection and rescue gear. As with active mines, practice Safety First!
