Resistance in North Dakota – Americana Collection

Every state has an abundance of abandoned structures – dilapidated barns, churches, and farm houses – at least every one of the 49 states I have seen and photographed. North Dakota was my most recent different state for travel and photography. Reminiscent of the other 48, they were there – including this dwelling on the American prairie.

Maybe as I once did, you view these deserted structures and declare: “What a shame!” But, as I ponder these remnants from American dreamers, pioneers, and families, I admire the work, dedication, and fortitude required to survive the struggles of man versus nature and man versus man in this nation and on this planet. Although it may appear abandoned, this structure remains standing as a monument in resistance to hardships and hazards exemplifying endurance on the Great Plains near Tioga, North Dakota.

Vermilion Flycatcher – Americana Collection

My experience has been that most birds in the wild are skittish. This non-breeding male Vermilion Flycatcher Pyrocephalus rubinus seemed to be curious about my presence in it’s space near the East River Pool at Saint Marks National Wildlife Refuge on the Florida Gulf Coast. If my camera had been on a tripod instead of a monopod the distinctively colored bird probably would have landed on the lens.

When reading about the habitat of non-breeding male Vermilion Flycatcher Pyrocephalus rubinus the phrase "near water" often appears. This Vermilion Flycatcher was discovered near the East River Pool of Saint Marks National Wildlife Refuge in Florida.
