Daniel K. Inouye Kilauea Point Lighthouse | \u00a92006 David Allio<\/p><\/div>\n

In a formal ceremony on May 4, 2013, the 16-meter tall reinforced concrete lighthouse on the northernmost point of the Garden Island of Kauai was rededicated as the Daniel K. Inouye Kilauea Point Lighthouse in honor of the late senator from Hawaii. Originally built in 1912 and dedicated in May 1913 the lighthouse is listed on National Register of Historic Places.<\/p>\n

\nThe Daniel K. Inouye Kilauea Point Lighthouse contains the world’s largest clamshell-shaped Fresnel lens weighing in at 4.5 tons. The lighthouse was decommissioned four decades ago when an automated marker light was installed makai of the lighthouse structure in 1976.<\/p>\n

\nA full moon provided the illumination for this photograph of the Daniel K. Inouye Kilauea Point Lighthouse. The 30-second exposure was made just after 3am.<\/p>\n
