Class J locomotives were designed, constructed, and maintained in Roanoke, Virginia. The 611 entered service on May&nbsp;29, 1950.  The 494,000-pound steam locomotive retired from passenger rail service on October&nbsp;24, 1959, but returned for excursions from 1982 through 1994.
